Peak Forest Tramway: one of the earliest mineral railways in Britain to link with an inland waterways system and to use iron rails. It opened in 1796, linking the vast quarries at Doveholes with the Bugsworth Canal Basin, 6 miles to the north east - a route engineered by Benjamin Outram, who successfully overcame the challenges posed by the north Derbyshire landscape—including constructing the second oldest railway tunnel in the world, the Stoddart Tunnel at Chapel-en-le-Frith. To view the surviving features of this amazing heritage project and understand their historic significance, download the Peak Forest Tramway trail guide and just hit the panoramic trail. Melandra Castle: 1st Century Roman fort 2 miles west of Glossop town centre on the A626. Standing on high ground above the River Etherow, the extensive site has been excavated, revealing fort walls, a shrine and the fort headquarters. Parking and picnic areas available.

Old Glossop: This lovely village is actually the original town of Glossop. 17th and 18th century cottages cluster around a Market Square and Cross. The impressive Norman church features an 18th century sundial. Running through the village is Glossop Brook—the perfect setting for a leisurely stroll. There is a history trail around Old Glossop—also the location of "Doctors Gate", a footpath which leads to the Snake Pass and Pennine Way.
